Neck Pain

Treatment for Neck Pain in Mississauga at Our Clinic

Also known as the cervical spine, the neck is home to a coordinated network of nerves, bones, joints and muscles that are designed to provide strength and stability while facilitating nerve communication with the brain. While undeniably intricate, the risk our bodies run with so much going on in this area is that any irritation along these nerve pathways can result in pain in the neck, head, shoulders, or even your arms and legs.
Most instances of neck pain will go away within a few days or weeks, especially with regular stretching and maintaining correct posture. However, neck pain that persists for an extended period could be an indication of a more serious problem and should be addressed by a doctor or physiotherapist.
Neck pain can manifest in a number of ways, ranging from a minor annoyance that is easily ignored, to an excruciating agony that interferes with daily activities or sleep. You may suffer from a stiff neck that makes it difficult to turn the head; a sharp, stabbing pain in one spot, or soreness and tenderness in a general area; or radiating pain that runs down into the shoulder, arms or fingers, or radiates up into the head.
Regardless of the severity of your neck pain, Mississauga clinic European Massage and Physiotherapy Center can help diagnose and treat it. Read below for just a few of the conditions we can help with!

Specific Conditions

Some conditions that can cause neck pain include pinched nerves, overexertion and prolonged poor posture. Some more serious issues to look out for include:

Spinal Stenosis

A common symptom of aging, spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the bone channel occupied by the spinal nerves or spinal cord, usually accompanied by radiating pain and weakness and/or numbness that is caused by compression of the nerves or spinal cord. In some cases, spinal stenosis can lead to serious problems such as extreme weakness or even paralysis, and may require surgery.

Whiplash

Typically identified by stiffness in the neck, headaches, or pain in the shoulder blades, whiplash is often the result of an abrupt backward and/or forward motion of the head that stretches and tears the muscles and tendons in the neck. This type of injury is usually associated with motor vehicle accidents. Symptoms may not become noticeable for up to 24 hours or more after the injury is sustained, and may include neck pain and stiffness, headaches, lower back pain, dizziness, pain or numbness in the arm or hand. Other symptoms include difficulty concentrating or remembering, and irritability or disturbance of normal sleep patterns.
In the past whiplash injuries were treated with immobilization in a cervical collar, but that is no longer considered best practice. Nowadays whiplash is treated using over-the-counter pain medications, such as ibuprofen or naproxen in combination with gentle exercise or physical therapy, massage, heat and ice.
